We arrive in Leh

So we're up at 12,000 feet and the air sure is different here. It's got a quality that I can't quite explain. Like it's super charged. If you believe in vibrations, then perhaps all the meditating that goes on here could have something to do with it. At any rate, when I got to our guest house, I lay down for a nap and felt so darn happy!

You've got to visit here if you ever get a chance. It's a large valley surrounded on all four sides with snow-capped mountains. The people here are mountain people and are so gentle and kind. It's overrun with tourists, but the locals still manage to maintain equanimity and dignity. There's no begging that I can see and there's love and compassion. It truly is a lovely place. The temperature feels like about 26 degrees during the day and about 18 degrees at night. There are no mosquitoes or bugs.

We were met at the airport by Geshe Lobsang, a high-ranking spiritual leader in this district. He's in charge of seven monasteries. After blessing us with a white kata (scarf) we were whisked away in a comfy taxi. Felt pretty special.

We're staying at a really lovely place, Kidar Guest House; so quiet and clean. Can't ask for anything better. It took me a while to realize that I have to run the water for a while to get it to run hot so I had been 6 days without a hot shower. It felt pretty glorious when Katie told me the trick.

For the first three days most of us had headaches and nausea from the high altitude. Unfortunately, Tekla, our organizer, got sick quite bad and on the fourth day had to return to Delhi. We really miss her but have carried on with the program. We'll meet up with her in Delhi on July 20. In the meantime, the trick is to drink at least 1.5 litres of water a day, take aspirin when needed and Gravol. Wish I'd remembered to bring some ginger chews...

Update: Tekla completely recovered from her mountain sickness (as soon as she got into the pressurized cabin on the plane she felt better). She but vows never to go to high elevations again! It was so good to see her vertical and healthy when she greeted us at the Delhi airport when we returned from Leh. :)
